The Hayne Vineyard is situated in St. Helena at the base of the Mayacamas
Mountains and is well known for its single-vineyard wines from the site. The
vines are moderate in size due to the gravelly, loam soils and the vineyard
produces small yields. The warm St. Helena temperatures are ideal for producing
sweet, jammy fruit and this vineyard tends to be picked at the beginning of
harvest each year. Nickel & Nickel produces wine from 9 acres.
Since 2009 was our first year working with this vineyard, we were excited
to see how it developed. Small, well-balanced vines produced evenly spaced
clusters and required very little thinning. Given the cool year, it was nice
to have the extra heat that the St. Helena AVA provided to help ripen the
fruit. Verasion occurred in early August, and we waited and watched as the
flavors matured, allowing us to harvest in late September. The Hayne family
participated in the harvest, each person with his or her own role to play, which
made it all very special.
Our first release of the Hayne Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely delightful.
Opulent cherry and blackberry flavors harmonize with the vanilla and spice
from the French oak. The lush, dark, jammy fruit offers a silky entrance that
expands and coats the palate, while the tannins are rich and supporting, leading
to a lengthy finish.
