2012 Sundawg Ridge Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
Russian River Valley
At 280 feet elevation, among rolling hills, old apple orchards and chestnut groves, the Sundawg Ridge Vineyard sits above the fog many mornings. This 6.9-acre, sustainably farmed vineyard was planted by the Kensler Family in 1999 and benefits from exceptional exposure, temperate microclimate and mineral rich Goldridge soils.
That old saying speak softly and carry a big… Not so much here. This is one of our smaller vineyards but vintage after vintage, it stands up and stands apart. Big, bold and always evolving, it shows spice and a characteristic earthiness, rich in red fruits led by wild cherry and offset by black cherry. Theres a smoky side that makes me yearn to demonstrate how to pair Pinot & Cue, and the tannins are supple and lingering, lasting well into the night, which a glass of this rarely does, its that pleasing. I just cant resist saying it: this dawg is definitely in the hunt and in fact, runs right on ahead. One notable critic said it best 'strikingly good.'

~ 93 Pts. "Outstanding" / One of the darkest colored Pinot Noirs from MacPhail Family is the 2012 Pinot Noir Sundawg Ridge, which saw 43% new French oak and spent 11 months in wood. Its clonal material is Pommard, Calera and Dijon clone 115. Another stunning Pinot from MacPhail, it exhibits a deep ruby color, a big, sweet kiss of red and blackcurrants, black cherries, earth, spice and background bouquet garni and roasted meats. Chewy, fleshy, succulent and opulent, this French-styled Pinot Noir should last for 5-6 years. Drink 2015-2021. - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
