Product Description

Background: The 2011 Hunky Dory Pinot Noir is predominately sourced from the Srawlodge vineyard running off the West Coast Road inthe upper Wairu valleys area of Marlborough. The grape vines grow in a mixture of glacial outwash soils exhibiting a mix of clay and stony gravels. Winemaking: A sunny and warm growing season ripened the grapes and these were hand-picked. The grapes were de-stemmed to tank for fermentation. The wine is racked and the grape skins are pressed and after settling spend 9 months in French oak barrels before being blended and bottled. Tasting Note: The bouquet is expressed with dark plum and cherry, spice and some vanilla. The palate has rich dark cherry and berryfruit flavours with some savoury and spice notes. The vanilla pod from the French oak melds well with the grape tannins and the wine is very drinkable. Food Matches: Hunky Dory Pinot Noir is delicious with lamb, beef, duck confit and anything to do with porcini mushrooms. Residual Sugar: 1.5g/l TA: 5.0g/l pH: 3.65 Alcohol: 13%

Region Description:

When the first growers planted grapes in Marlborough in the 1970s (there is evidence of plantings as early as 1870s), it is unlikely they would have foreseen the extent of the growth and fame that the region’s wine industry would achieve, based upon a single varietal called Sauvignon Blanc. The distinctive pungency and zest fruit flavours of the first Marlborough wines, in particular Sauvignon Blanc, captured the imagination of the country's winemakers as well as international wine commentators and consumers and sparked an unparalleled boom in vineyard development. Worldwide interest in Marlborough wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, has continued to fuel that regional wine boom.
