Aurélien VERDET , born in April 1981 , is an enthusiastic , driven young man . His father was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture back in the early 1970s and since his retirement in 2005 , Aurélien has carried on the tradition . Auréliens own Domaine comprised 4.5 hectares of Hautes Côtes de Nuits until 2009. In that year , he took over vines under a farming agreement in Vosne Romanée village and 1er cru Beaux Monts and 1er cru Nuits Damodes and Boudots . This entitled him to call them Domaine holdings .

He augments his range through grape contracts under which he lays down the criteria for the early part of the growing season with his suppliers . He then takes over the vineyard work in July and harvests and vinifies the grapes then bottles the wines . These grapes are tended organically but are not certified . Only his own Domaine is certified AB organic . Fruit is harvested manually and all the cuvées are vinified the same way : he uses minimal sulphur which disappears during the vinification anyway and the sulphur level is 60 80 mg/l maximum mostly originating from the indigenous yeasts . Vinifications are long up to 30 days but his extraction is very gentle : up to 10 days cold maceration then gentle pumping over of the juice to stimulate fermentation After 15 days , the caps will be punched down more or less frequently depending on the vintage structure . The wines are aged in oak barrels from Burgundy , Tronçais and Vosges forests not exceeding 1/3 new each year

Nuits 1C Damodes ( fermage from 2009) : 0.3 hectares planted 1960s The 1er Cru lies at the top of the slope north of Nuits St Georges and just before Vosne Romanée The bouquet is redolent of damsons and red plums with a complex palate and solid structure

Nuits S G 1C Boudots (fermage from 2009 ) : 0.3 hectares planted 1960s the vineyard is just below Damodes but floral and violetty are the watchwords on the nose ; the palate is elegant yet dense with ethereal perfume on the finish

Nuits S G 1er cru la Richemone lying at same altitude as Boudots this has a dark cherry nose and a meaty , dense palate with a long ripe cherry finish

Vosne Romanée 1C BeauxMonts ( fermage from 2009 ) 0,33 ha planted 1970s dark cherry and spice from this inimitably vosne vineyard

Morey St Denis : a superb plot immediately above the Grand Cru Clos de Tart ; 1,5 hectares characteristic nose of morello cherry and polished wood with a complete mouth filling velvet texture on the palate

Nuits St Georges (Peruis Maréchaux ) on the Vosne side of Nuits 0.5 hectares Planted 1970s This is black fruit with a hint of smoke and a stylish palate with a remarkable velvet texture

Vosne Romanée AC ( fermage from 2009 ) Total acreage 0,72 Ha 4 plots Les Ormes , La Colombière , Jacquelines , Ravioles . Planted 1970s

Gevrey Chambertin AC 0.75 hectares Planted 1970s This plot lies just east of Mazis Chambertin and the wine has an intensely aromatic nose of peony and violet with a great weight and density

Chambolle Musigny AC ( single plot in Les Condemennes just under 1er Cru Charmes since 2009) 0.5 hectares Planted late 1970s Floral and enticing with archetypal Chambolle plumpness and breed

Hautes Côtes Le Prieuré : (owned outright ) planted 1970s certified organic since 1971 4 hectares for red 0.3 hectares white South facing slope behind the charming village of Arcenant 5 miles west of Nuits St Georges Soils : limestone & clay with occasional rock bands 30 cm below the surface which ensures low yield and high quality . The PRIEURE red is reminiscent of a Nuits St georges with an intensely aromatic , ripe raspberry bouquet and concentrated palate The white PRIEURE has a crystalline nose of lime zest and mineral stoniness with a full body and mouth watering acidity

Region Description

(pee noh nwahr)—A tricky grape to grow, Pinot Noir makes some of the best wines in the world. The prototype wine is red Burgundy from France but Oregon, California, New Zealand, and parts of Australia also produce good Pinot Noir. The wine is lighter in color than Cabernet or Merlot with relatively high alcohol, medium-to-high acidity, and medium-to-low tannin. Its flavors and aromas can be very fruity or earthy and woodsy, depending on how it is grown. It is rarely blended with other grapes.
