Region Description

(shah toe nuf doo pahp)—Situated on the sun-baked southern reaches of the Rhone Valley, this appellation grows a great number of grape varieties, but is best known for its full-bodied dry reds. As many as thirteen different kinds of grape can end up in one bottle, although most vintners use only three or four, especially Syrah, Mourvédre, and Grenache.

Please note: this vessel is 1.50L, not the standard 750mL.

The 2001 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Usseglio Aieul is a full-bodied, concentrated wine with a deep color and complex aromas of blackberries, kirsch, garrigue, and roasted meat. Tasting notes include flavors of dark fruit like plum and black cherry, combined with earthy notes of tobacco, licorice, and spice. Reviewers have praised its seamless texture, balanced acidity, and long finish.

Aroma and Flavor Profile
  • Aromas: Blackberries, kirsch, licorice, roasted meats, tobacco, garrigue (wild herbs), and spice.
  • Flavors: Ripe plum, fig, black cherry, kirsch, cocoa, and a mix of fruit and earth notes.
  • Texture: Superb, full-bodied, enormous, and seamless.
  • Finish: Very long and layered.

Overall Characteristics
  • Style: Intense and powerful, with a focus on fruit and spice.
  • Development: Considered a monumental and near-perfect wine that was drinking very well around 2021.
  • Balance: A balance of rich fruit essences and spiced undertones, with a good level of acidity.
