Vintage: 2009 Tasting Notes: Beaurouge is french for "Beautiful Red" and is exactly what this new wine from Beaulieu Vineyard is. Our premiere vintage of Beaulieu Vineyard Beaurouge showcases winemaking artistry in the blending of grape varietals and appellations to make a layered, fruit-forward wine. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon form the core, with opulent blackberry, plum and chocolatecherry truffle expression. The Merlot fills out the midpalate with plush texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure. Zinfandel, with its dash of black pepper, and Syrah add deep red-fruit notes and spice. Petite Sirah, Touriga, and Mourvèdre deepen the wines inky color, while Carignane gives hints of strawberry, Grenache adds dark raspberry and bay leaf, and Sangiovese enlivens the wine with vibrant wild-cherry notes. A little splash of Petit Verdot completes the blend with a hint of violet. Vineyard Notes: We selected the grapes from regions of Napa Valley that excel in developing each varietals unique flavors and balance. Grape varietals are highly influenced by terroir (soils, mesoclimates, exposure and cultivation techniques) and the personality of the wine reflects their growing conditions. We selected grapes from the entire length of Napa Valley, including our estate vineyards in the Los Carneros, Rutherford, St. Helena and Calistoga appellations. Winemaker Notes: After destemming and lightly crushing the hand-harvested grapes, we cold soaked the must for two to three days for gentle flavor extraction. During fermentation, we pumped over the cap to incorporate the flavor-rich skins into the juice. Malolactic fermentation rounded the flavors (part done in-barrel), and a year of barrel aging infused the layers of red and dark fruit flavors with oak spice nuances.
